It is impossible to have a superhero without an equally impressive supervillain; what would be the purpose of the hero if there was no adversary? Marvel Studios has often been criticized for its lackluster villains, with nearly all of them being male – something which also raises questions about gender equality. Without a compelling antagonist, the heroic narrative loses much of its tension and excitement; Marvel needs to step up its game in order to restore balance and show that it takes villainy as seriously as heroism.

Which villains truly excelled at being an unstoppable force of destruction, and which ones were so ineffective that they simply failed to make any kind of lasting impression? We’ve judged all the major antagonists from Iron Man up to Captain America: Civil War on their performances thus far, in order to determine which ones have been the most successful in terms of wreaking havoc and causing chaos. Some have proved themselves to be true masters of carnage, while others have been so lackluster that you almost forget they ever existed.

10. Crossbones (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War)

Brock Rumlow’s metamorphosis from a supportive SHIELD agent to an evil HYDRA lieutenant is adequately accomplished. Even though Crossbones hasn’t had much of an opportunity for intricate character growth, he has featured in some of the best action sequences across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite this, his death seems certain regardless of what Frank Grillo might think about it.

9. Thanos (Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War)

Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan, Thanos, is almost entirely composed of computer-generated imagery; however, he manages to bring a surprising amount of poise and grace to the character. Despite his outlandish appearance as a large purple cucumber, Brolin imbues him with an unexpected degree of emotion and seriousness.

8. Armin Zola (Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

Toby Jones’s portrayal of the Nazi sidekick in the first Captain America movie was certainly noteworthy, but it was in The Winter Soldier where he truly shined. Here, he played a mischievous artificial intelligence that had been imprisoned within a large, antiquated computer system. His performance captured the attention of viewers and highlighted his versatility as an actor.

It’s a bizarre situation akin to a modern-day version of Project Paperclip – an insane science fiction plot that has come to life – and he has managed to create a huge amount of chaos in the face of an ancient, forgotten display.

7. General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War)

William Hurt gives a remarkable performance as the seemingly benevolent general whose unwavering ambition to capture the Hulk leads to chaos. He truly excels in Civil War; he is able to accomplish something that no one else has been able to do, which is split up the Avengers without having to resort to physical violence. His portrayal of this character is nothing short of incredible and showcases his immense acting ability.

6. The Vulture (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

Michael Keaton is utterly superb in almost every role he plays, and his portrayal of the blue-collar worker Toombs, driven out of business due to circumstances beyond his control, is especially believable and engrossing. You can’t help but like this character; at the climax of the movie when he decides not to expose Spiderman’s secret identity, it speaks volumes about his moral fibre as an individual.

5. The Winter Soldier (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

Although he may not be a completely terrible person, Bucky’s Soviet assassin persona still makes him one of Marvel’s most remarkable villains. His tumultuous past consisting of prolonged maltreatment and manipulation creates an emotionally charged situation when he confronts his close friend Steve Rogers, making the confrontation all the more poignant. This is what truly sets Bucky apart from other comic book antagonists and elevates him to one of the best bad guys in the Marvel universe.

4. Ultron (Avengers: Age of Ultron)

No matter what one might think of the movie, it cannot be denied that James Spader delivered a truly memorable performance as Ultron in Iron Man. His portrayal of the villainous robot was full of menacing charm, and it is something that is not easily replicated in other Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Despite being wasted on an ultimately unremarkable movie, Spader’s work gave life to this character and made him an unforgettable figure within the industry.

Even after the details of the story involving flying a city into the air have faded away, we will still retain an indelible memory of how great Ultron was. Its sheer excellence and brilliance will remain in our consciousness for years to come, ensuring that it will never be forgotten.

3. Zemo (Captain America: Civil War)

Zemo, an MCU baddie who truly transcended the archetypal villain. He was not a typical evil mastermind, nor did he possess any extraordinary abilities or superhuman strength. His weapon of choice was not a superpower or a bank account full of money; his goal wasn’t to gain control over the world and become its ruler. Instead, he proved to be something far more dangerous: an ordinary person with extraordinary determination and ambition – one that completely broke the mould.

Zemo is a broken man, consumed by grief and despair after his beloved wife and child were tragically killed in Sokovia. With nothing left to lose, he has become an unrelenting force of vengeance; a perfect example that villains don’t require grandiose battle sequences or intricate death machines to be effective. All they need is a powerful motivation for revenge and the wits to craft a cunning plan – which Zemo certainly possesses in spades.

2. Loki (Thor, Avengers, Thor: The Dark World)

Loki, Thor’s adopted brother, has been a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ever since his first appearance. His sharp wit and penchant for deception have made him an unforgettable villain. With his acerbic remarks (“You mewling quim”) and often dashing style – not to mention those hats! – Loki has won over audiences while scheming against our heroes. We can only hope that he will return one more time for the final showdown of the MCU, as we would miss out on a great character if he was absent from this epic conclusion.

We have an affinity for Loki because we can relate to him. It’s a personal journey for him, fueled by envy, dismissal and the constant feeling of not measuring up. His aspiration for power is driven by his resentment and Tom Hiddleston was cast perfectly in this role; he is attractive, erudite, but also acerbic.

1. Erik Killmonger (Black Panther)

Michael B Jordan’s stunning portrayal of the complex, damaged idealist Killmonger left audiences in awe when Black Panther graced our screens. His arc is masterfully crafted, with a heartbreaking conclusion, and brought to life by Jordan’s pitch-perfect performance. Not only that, but it also allowed viewers to experience something refreshingly different; in many ways Killmonger is the true hero of the story while T’Challa takes on a more subordinate role as leader.
